OFA Eye Certification Exams

VEC is proud to be able to provide OFA Eye Certification Registry examinations to breeders of dogs. These examinations can be performed only by qualified board-certified veterinary ophthalmologists. These examinations find potential heritable eye diseases in dogs before they are passed. on to future generations, helping to limit the amount of genetic eye diseases in dogs, and produce healthier dogs.

What is a Genetic Disease?

Genetic diseases are those that are passed on from parent to offspring through genes that carry the codes for each specific trait. Many of the diseases and disorders that affect the eyes are associated with specific genetic factors and multiple eye diseases which affect dogs are known to exhibit evidence of a genetic or heritable cause. The Top 10 Genetic Diseases according to the American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologists (ACVO) are listed below.

  • Keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS)
  • Cataract
  • Lens luxation or subluxation
  • Glaucoma
  • Persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous (PHPV)
  • Retinal detachment
  • Retinal dysplasia – geographic or detached forms
  • Optic nerve coloboma
  • Optic nerve hypoplasia
  • Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRA)
